Cheap Charlie' s Fish and Chips
Comment:
Authentic fish and chips with soft, succulent fish wrapped in a batter. The chips are British style: thick cut; the fish is boneless - sprinkle over a load of malt vinegar and serve with a portion of mushy peas and a slice of bread and butter and you are treated to either a blast from the past or a unfamiliar taste from the streets of the UK. At Charlie's they also serve other Brit favourites such as fat pork sausages, baked beans, eggs and some sandwiches, but come on, it's got to be fish and chips when you come here. They also serve beer, wine and spirits.

Rays Guesthouse, Restaurant & Bar

The name doesn’t really give much away when trying to get an idea of this place. In fact, it’s hard to know where to start in describing what is both an Italian gothic labyrinth, a traditional Lanna townhouse and an English pub, restaurant and guesthouse. The paintings that embellish the first two floors are nothing less than fantastic; surreal, hallucinogenic and exquisitely detailed; the Italian painter who recently passed away has created a lifetime of art and left it here in this eclectic crossroads of style. Each of the floors has stone walls, teak furniture and plenty of other works of art, both Italian and Lanna. It really is astounding, as good, if not better, than any gallery you’ll find in the city. And so when I tell you that under this canopy of surrealist, mind bending art you can have bacon on eggs or a steak and kidney pie . . . well, you probably wouldn’t believe me. It’s also a guesthouse with three rooms (500 – 700 baht a night) with en-suite bathroom, air-con, TV, breakfast; and it’s a pub with UBC and WETV. Most of the grub is English but they do serve some Thai food.

Just down the road from the indispensably meretricious girly bars is this new English Pub. Serving quintessentially English grub like fish fingers, chips and beans and the anglo-curry, chicken masala
The interior is palatial and it would be a good place to watch sports - predominantly football - as there’s a framework of comfortable settees around the TV.

UN Irish Pub
Comment: The U.N Irish Pub is a well-known Chiang Mai landmark. Not only is it a formidable drinking establishment, but it sponsors sports teams such as the ‘Farangutans’ (football) and ‘The Suas’ (rugby). On most nights the pub is buzzing with locals and travellers, Thursday night is quiz night and there’s usually live music on Fridays. If you are looking for a spot to watch the World Cup football and want a lively crowd, then this is the place to come. It’s a mixed crowd at the Irish, with people from all over the world drinking there. It has to be said that the English will be out in force for the games, closely booed on by lots of Scottish and Irish, there’s usually a handful of Aussies, Americans and French, too.
